Problem
When PhpStorm is installed using the JetBrains Toolbox application on Ubuntu 23.10, two identical PhpStorm icons appear in the Activities section.
Cause
This behavior can occur if both Early Access Program (EAP) and Release versions of PhpStorm were installed. Additionally, when the Toolbox application updates an EAP version to the latest official release, it might lead to duplicate entries in the Activities section if the Desktop Entry files were not updated or cleaned properly.
Resolution
To resolve this issue:
-
Navigate to the directory containing application Desktop Entry files:
~/.local/share/applications -
Look for duplicate
.desktopfiles related to PhpStorm. They typically start withjetbrains-. For example:jetbrains-phpstorm.desktopjetbrains-phpstormEAP.desktop
-
Determine which
.desktopfile corresponds to the currently used PhpStorm installation. If unsure, compare the file paths defined in theExecproperties of these files. -
Remove the unnecessary
.desktopfile(s) causing the duplication. Use the command:rm ~/.local/share/applications/<filename>.desktopReplace
<filename>with the name of the undesired.desktopfile. -
Refresh the Activities view by restarting the GNOME shell or logging out and back in.
If this does not resolve the issue or if further assistance is needed, reproduce the issue and collect logs by following the instructions in the Toolbox App: How to collect Toolbox App logs article. Upload the logs to JetBrains via uploads.jetbrains.com and provide the upload ID for further analysis.
