Question
How can one profile a .NET / .NET Core application using dotTrace?
Answer
One can follow the steps described in Profile .NET Core or .NET Application to profile a .NET application. This article describes how to profile an application using a standalone dotTrace profiler. When using Visual Studio with the dotTrace plugin, please refer to Start Profiling Session from Visual Studio. When using Rider one can use Performance profiling of .NET code as a guide on how to start profiling a .NET application in Rider. Please note that the Profiling Type selected in dotTrace determines the type of information that will be collected during profiling. For identifying the slowest parts of your code, Sampling is likely the best choice. However, if one needs to pinpoint performance problems that occur at particular moments, Timeline profiling is preferable. Further details on profiling types are available in Choose profiling type.
