dotTrace self-profiling API generates a series or .tmp files instead of .dtp or .dtt

Question

While using self-profiling API, dotTrace generated multiple .tmp files instead of one .dtp or .dtt file. How can I open the snapshot?

Cause

Self-profiling API does not pack the profiling data into a single file, instead it stores them as a set of .tmp{ID} files. This is the same format used by dotTrace standalone when a snapshot is collected and stored in the temporary snapshot storage. Self-profiling API does not pack the snapshot into a singular .dtp or .dtt file.

Resolution

1. In the left panel of dotTrace Home, click Open Snapshot...
2. Choose the first .tmp file and click Open.
