How to profile native memory allocations with dotTrace

When profiling a C# application, it may be necessary to examine how the target application works with unmanaged memory. How can I profile native memory allocations with dotTrace?

Answer

1. Enable "Collect native allocations" options under Timeline profiling options

2. (optional) Enable "Collect only unreleased allocations" to limit data collection to allocations that were still in the unmanaged heap at the moment of taking the snapshot

3. Run the profiling session and collect a snapshot

4. Open the snapshot in dotTrace

5. Use Native Allocations event filter to show only native allocations in the timeline viewer
