Question
How to collect Unreal Build Tool logs with timing information that describes how long each build step takes?
Answer
The steps below describe how to collect Unreal Build Tool logs with detailed timing information:
- Add the following flags to
%appdata%\Unreal Engine\UnrealBuildTool\BuildConfiguration.xml:bShowCompilationTimes,bShowPerActionCompilationTimes,bLogActionCommandLines,bPrintToolChainTimingInfo - Make a minimal change to an arbitrary source file in the project
- Save changes in Rider
- Start building the project using CLI (
<path_to_UE>\Engine\Build\BatchFiles\Build.bat <project_name> Win64 Development -Project="<project_path>.uproject") - Wait until the project is finished building
Collect UBT logs by archiving %localappdata%\UnrealBuildTool, and remove diagnostic flags from BuildConfiguration.xml
BuildConfiguration.xml example with diagnostic flags mentioned in this article:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<Configuration xmlns="https://www.unrealengine.com/BuildConfiguration">
<WindowsPlatform>
<Compiler>VisualStudio2022</Compiler>
</WindowsPlatform>
<ParallelExecutor>
<bShowCompilationTimes>true</bShowCompilationTimes>
<bShowPerActionCompilationTimes>true</bShowPerActionCompilationTimes>
<bLogActionCommandLines>true</bLogActionCommandLines>
</ParallelExecutor>
</Configuration>
