Question
How to enable Python integration in Rider for Unreal Engine projects?
Answer
Follow the steps below to enable Python integration in Rider:
- Enable Python plugin in Unreal Editor
- Install Python Community Edition plugin
-
Configure a new interpreter:
- Open your python script directory in Rider using File->Open or (if you are bundling your scripts with the UE project) open your project using sln file
- Navigate to Settings | Build, Execution, Deployment | Python Interpreter and add a new local interpreter (Add interpreter -> Add local interpreter...)
- Create a new virtual environment using an interpreter bundled with UE as base interpreter (here's an example of the Base interpreter path:
{path_to_UE}\Engine\Binaries\ThirdParty\Python3\Win64\python.exe)
-
Add the PythonStub to the interpreter paths:
- Open Settings | Build, Execution, Deployment | Python Interpreter, use the Python Interpreter dropdown and pick "Show All":
- Select the interpreter, click the Show Interpreter Paths button
:
- Add a new path pointing to
PythonStubdirectory:- The PyhonStub directory is located under
PROJECTDIR/Intermediate/PythonStub. In case it is missing, see the Setting up Autocomplete for Editor Python Scripting page for instructions to generate it.
- The PyhonStub directory is located under
- Open Settings | Build, Execution, Deployment | Python Interpreter, use the Python Interpreter dropdown and pick "Show All":
- Use Help -> Edit Custom Properties action, add a line
idea.max.intellisense.filesize = 25000and restart the IDE - Rider should be able to resolve UE symbols and suggest completion shortly after opening a Python script after the restart
