Problem
RiderLink is causing Unreal Engine projects build failure when upgrading the UE version.
Rider version is too old to support newer UE versions.
Solution
Rider/Unreal Engine integration relays on two plugins: UnrealLink IDE plugin bundled in Rider, and RiderLink installed in UE engine/game.
RiderLink causes build failure
When users upgrade the Unreal Engine version, RiderLink may have compatibility issues with the newer Unreal version, thus UE projects may show build failures. Users should check the installed RiderLink version, and use the RiderLink compatible with IDE versions.
Users can try to reinstall the RiderLink plugin in IDE, Settings | Languages & Frameworks | Unreal Engine.
Rider version is outdated
Another situation is Rider is too old to be compatible with a newer Unreal version.
For example, Rider 2022.2 doesn't support RiderLink integration with Unreal Engine 5.2 on Mac due to the following reasons:
- UE5.2 requires XCode minimum version 14.1
- RiderLink bundled with Rider 2022.2 uses code deprecated in xCode 14.1; (same as 2022.3)
- RiderLink was patched with the Rider 2023.1 release. It doesn't use deprecated code anymore and can be compiled using XCode 14.1
In that situation, upgrading IDE versions would resolve the issue.
If it's not applicable, you can uninstall RiderLink from UE projects, but they will lose all integration features afterwards, only basic code editing features supported.
You can try to install a newer RiderLink from the higher Rider version, then stay using the current Rider.
It's not recommended, you have to check:
- Newer RiderLink is compatible with the upgraded Unreal version
- The old UnrealLink plugin in Rider is also compatible with the newer RiderLink plugin
