Question
How to profile the ReSharper backend process when ReSharper is in out-of-process mode?
Answer
In order to get a performance snapshot for the ReSharper backend process using dotTrace, follow these steps:
- Download and install dotTrace Performance profiler and Select 64-bit version;
- Start dotTrace. The dotTrace Home window will open.
- Under Choose a preset select General;
- Run Visual Studio with ReSharper with "out of process" mode enabled;
- Under Running Process click on ReSharper backend exe (ReSharper.Backend64c.exe - for x64, ReSharper.Backend64ac.exe - for ARM-based systems, ReSharper.Backend32c.exe - for x32).
- Make sure the following options are set in Profiler Options:
- Profiling type: Timeline (or Tracing or Sampling if you have been asked to collect exactly Tracing/Sampling snapshot).
- Collect profiling data from start: on (to start profiling immediately) or off otherwise.
- Click Start.
- If profiling starts immediately, then:
- Reproduce the issue;
- Click the Get Snapshot button in the profiling controller window.
- Otherwise:
- Click the Start recording (Start) button in the profiling controller window;
- Perform actions which are slow with ReSharper (typing, switching between documents, building etc);
- Click the Get Snapshot button in the profiling controller window.
- In dotTrace Performance Viewer, save the resulting snapshot using the File | Save Snapshot... menu.
- Compress the snapshot file using Zip.
- Upload the file to the JetBrains server, copy the Upload ID.
- Create a new issue in the ReSharper issue tracker. In the issue, provide a short description of the performance problems you're experiencing and share the Upload ID.
