Problem
After performing a Git pull in an Unreal Engine C++ project and reopening Rider, newly added code files do not appear in Rider's project solution view (Project View), though they are confirmed to exist in the file directory.
Cause
The issue arises because the project is described in the .vcxproj file, which needs to be updated to reflect changes made externally, such as newly added files. This file is generated by the Unreal Build Tool (UBT) during Visual Studio (VS) project generation, and it is usually not part of the project's source control.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, several approaches can be taken:
-
Regenerate Project Files:
- Right-click on the Game.uproject file and select "Generate Visual Studio project files."
-
Use Rider’s Refresh Project Button:
- Use the "Refresh project files" button found on Rider's toolbar (top-right corner). It invokes the same "Generate Visual Studio project files." action;
-
Open the
.uprojectFile Directly:- Instead of opening the solution (.sln) file, open the Game.uproject file directly within Rider. This method allows Rider to automatically handle external changes, such as Git pulls, without the need to regenerate project files.
JetBrains has recognized this process can be improved and is considering enhancements. You can follow and upvote the feature request (RIDER-125875) to stay updated on its progress.
