Question
Does running a separate TeamCity server for testing purposes (for example, to test an update before updating the production server) require a separate TeamCity Enterprise license?
Answer
A single TeamCity Enterprise license can only be used on a single running TeamCity server at any given time. The same TeamCity Enterprise license cannot be used on both the production and testing servers simultaneously.
In many cases, basic testing of a new update may be performed using TeamCity Professional, which doesn't require a license key. It has some limitations compared to TeamCity Enterprise, as described in the documentation.
If these limitations affect testing (for example, the server has more than 100 build configurations), the TeamCity Enterprise trial license may be used. The trial license may be obtained using the link on the TeamCity download page. If the trial needs to be extended or repeated, contact the JetBrains sales department.
