Public sources of truth
Currently there are two main, legally approved public sources of truth for users:
- Product Data Collection FAQ
-
Product Data Collection and Usage notice which contains details on:
- What type of data is collected (detailed code-related data, anonymous telemetry, behavioral data, cookies and other web trackers)
- Versions of the products in which detailed code-related data will be rolled out
- Reasons why we collect this data
- Details on how the data is collected depending on the obtained product license
- A list of safeguards to protect user information
- A link to Product Data Collection FAQ
Official blog post
We also have an official blog post that describes our intention to enable detailed data sharing for non-commercial users automatically starting with 2025.3.1, and reasons behind it:
TL;DR:
What is changing: Only for free non-commercial license users - starting with 2025.3.1, data sharing will be enabled in your IDE by default. A notification about corresponding updates in the Terms of Use will be shown that users will need to accept to continue. The option itself CAN BE DISABLED ANYTIME afterwards via the settings.
When: Release of IntelliJ IDEA 2025.3.1 is scheduled for December 16, 2025.
Who is affected: ONLY free non-commercial license users.
Who IS NOT affected: Everybody else from organizations to individuals using commercial licenses, free trials, free community licenses, or EAP builds.
Why: The goal is to enhance AI features such as single-line code completion and next-edit prediction while avoiding malicious code and incoherent suggestions, keep the cost of these features low and open-source our own Language Models whenever possible.
