Overview
If you received a marketing email from JetBrains saying that 40 AI credits have been added to your account and inviting you to "Open Junie in your IDE’s terminal and try it on a real task", this article explains what those credits are and how they work.
Some Junie users received a promotional $40 trial balance that can be used with Junie CLI, the command-line version of Junie. These credits are added as a separate Trial Balance license and are independent from the Junie plugin in your IDE.
The Trial Balance is used automatically by Junie CLI first. After the $40 is fully used or expires, Junie CLI switches back to your regular AI subscription (if you have one). These credits never change the quota shown in the IDE plugin or AI Assistant widget.
Note: If you did not receive such an email, this specific promotion may not apply to your account.
Email this article refers to
This article describes the credits mentioned in the following marketing email:
Hello there,
Last time you used Junie in your IDE, it was still in Beta. Since then, Junie has changed in a few significant ways:
• Out of Beta and a top coding agent. On the independent SWE-Rebench leaderboard, Junie ranks as a leading coding agent. • Real IDE debugging. Junie can set breakpoints, inspect runtime state, and step through your code to find why something breaks. No other coding agent does this. The rest just read stack traces. • Agentic code review. Junie flags issues inline, so you can accept or reject each suggestion like you would in a conversation with a reviewer. • Plan mode for fewer surprises. Junie writes a structured plan before it touches code, so you can approve the approach before a single line changes.
We've already added 40 AI credits to your account – no promo code and no setup required. Open Junie in your IDE’s terminal and try it on a real task.
If Junie still doesn't quite match your workflow, please let us know by using the feedback form in your IDE – your notes help decide what we ship next.
Kind regards, The Junie team JetBrains Make it happen. With code.
Check and use your $40 Junie CLI credits
- Start Junie CLI
-
After installation, run: junie
in your terminal (or the built-in terminal in your IDE).
-
- Sign in with your JetBrains Account
- Choose Sign in with JetBrains Account.
- Complete the login in your browser using the same JetBrains Account email address that received the "Junie CLI 40 free credits" email.
- Check your balance
- In the Junie CLI prompt, type: /usage
- Press Enter.
- Junie CLI will show your current balance, including the Trial Balance line with the promotional $40 credits (if available).
- Use Junie CLI normally
- Run Junie CLI commands as usual. Requests that consume AI credits will draw from the Trial Balance first until it is exhausted or expires, then continue on your regular AI subscription.
Important notes
- CLI-only credits: These $40 credits are specific to Junie CLI and cannot be moved to or displayed in the Junie IDE plugin or the AI Assistant widget.
- Stable vs EAP / nightly builds: Use the stable release of Junie CLI to spend these promotional credits. EAP and nightly builds may use a different quota that does not consume this trial balance.
- Automatic application, no code needed: The credits are applied automatically when you sign in with the correct JetBrains Account. There is no promo code or license key to enter.
- Expiration: The trial credits are valid until the expiration date stated in your email or account. After that date, any remaining trial balance expires and Junie CLI continues on your regular AI subscription (if available).
