Question
When should antivirus or other security software be checked as a possible cause of an IDE problem?
Answer
Real-time scanning intercepts file and process operations. During indexing, builds, and version control operations the IDE creates and reads many files, the antivirus scans each of them, and the IDE process halts while it waits. Security software can also block IDE executables outright. Most reports involve Windows, but any system with real-time scanning can behave the same way.
Check the antivirus first for these symptoms:
| Symptom | See |
|---|---|
| Build is slow or pauses repeatedly | Antivirus Impact on Build Speed, Build is slow in IntelliJ IDEA |
| Startup is slow: the splash screen takes more than 20 seconds to appear (Windows) | Slow startup on Windows |
| Indexing never finishes; UI elements stop reacting to clicks (Windows) | Endless indexing on Windows |
| Git operations take minutes instead of seconds | Git operations perform slowly |
Startup or build fails with Permission denied: listen
|
IDE startup or Build process fail with error "Permission denied: listen" |
IDE or plugin executables are reported as malware or blocked, for example copilot-agent-win.exe
|
What to do if files are flagged as virus or malware, copilot-agent-win.exe is being blocked |
| IDE distribution download hangs at the end | IDE distribution download doesn't work or hangs at the end |
To confirm, temporarily pause the antivirus real-time protection and repeat the failing operation. If the problem disappears, do not leave the antivirus disabled: add the IDE directories, project directories, and IDE processes to the scan exclusions instead (see How to exclude IDE folders from the security scan). On Windows, the IDE detects Windows Defender and offers to configure the exclusions automatically.
If the antivirus flags an IDE file as malicious, report the false positive to the antivirus vendor; only the vendor can fix their detection rules.
