Background/Situation
In the IDE UI, Tool windows might have different placements that can be chosen in the tool window context menu, Move To...
It's also possible to drag and drop tool window buttons from one place to another.
Question
What is the difference between available tool window placement options?
Answer
The window placement consists of two words indicating the X position and Y position of the activated tool window relative to the main IDE frame and another tool window that can be docked side by side.
Let's take Right Top, Right bottom and Bottom Right as an example.
- Right Top
The first word, Right, indicates the side of the main IDE frame that the longer tool window side will be snapped to when you activate the tool window and see its contents. It also defines the sidebar — left or right narrow stripe — where the tool window icon will appear.
In the picture below there is a vertically oriented Notifications tool window on the right side of the IDE frame:
- Right Bottom
The second word indicates where the activated tool window will be shown if you have two tool windows side-by-side. In the example below, the Database window has been moved to Right Bottom.
The Database icon is shown below the small horizontal separator on the sidebar. If you activate Notifications and Database at the same time, they will both be shown stacked vertically. If you choose Right Top placement for Database, same as Notifications, the last activated tool window would replace the former one.
- Bottom Right and Bottom Left
Bottom Right placement indicates the horizontal tool window that will appear to the right of the Bottom Left window (if there is any activated). Its icon is shown in the lower IDE part on the right sidebar. Example for the Terminal moved to Bottom Right:
