How to disable OS Native File Chooser on macOS and Windows, and switch to IntelliJ File Chooser?

Background

In some cases, the OS native file chooser called by IntelliJ may freeze when opening folders on network drives (Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.).

Question

How to enable IntelliJ built-in file chooser instead of the OS native one?

Solution 1

Go to File | Settings | Advanced Settings and disable the option to Use native file chooser dialog on Windows/macOS:

Solution 2

Alternatively, you can disable the IDE registry key ide.ui.new.file.chooser to use the old file chooser dialog.

To get to the registry:

  • Open Search Everywhere (Shift-Shift), type "registry" in the search bar
  • Select the first hit from the top
  • In the dialog that opens, start typing the name of the property to find it quickly
