Problem
As of November 2024, IntelliJ IDEA still uses version 1.2023.10 of the plantUML library, which lacks some of the newest plantUML features.
Latest stable version of the library is 1.2024.8.
Solution
You can specify a custom plantUML JAR that IntelliJ IDEA will use instead of the default.
To do that, please follow the steps below (tested on version 2024.2.4):
-
In file explorer, navigate to this folder: IDE system directory\markdown\download Example on Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\IntelliJIdea2024.2\markdown\download -
Remove the
plantumllanguageextensiondirectory that contains the currently downloaded plantUML JAR of version 1.2023.10 -
In your browser, go to https://github.com/plantuml/plantuml/releases, find the release that you want (e.g., plantuml-1.2024.8.jar) and r-click -> Copy link address. You will end up with a link like this:
https://github.com/plantuml/plantuml/releases/download/v1.2024.8/plantuml-1.2024.8.jar -
In the IDE, click "Navigate | Search Everywhere" or Shift-Shift -> type "registry" -> select the first found item to open the IDE registry dialog.
-
In the Registry dialog, start typing to find the option called
markdown.plantuml.download.link -
Change the value to the link you copied and close the dialog to save the change
-
Go to File | Settings | Languages & Frameworks | Markdown and click 'Install' next to the PlantUML extension -> this will force the IDE to download the JAR from the location you specified in the registry.
-
Check the current version in a
.mdfile using the syntax below:```plantuml @startuml version @enduml ```
