Unable to open a project in IntelliJ IDEA

Problem

The IntelliJ IDEA window freezes in an attempt to open a project. The IDE process needs to be killed from the OS task manager to continue

Solution

  • File | Invalidate Caches | Invalidate and Restart
  • Close the IDE
  • Delete the IDE system directory. All IDE settings except Local History will be preserved
  • Backup and delete all .iml files and the .idea directory from a project root folder
  • Try to open a project in the IDE once again
