How to persist file tabs to prevent automatic closing triggered by IDEA?

If you regularly need to open more than ten (default value) files in a project, navigate to File | Settings | Editor | General | Editor Tabs | Closing Policy, increase the Tab limit and define the behavior when it’s exceeded.
