IntelliJ IDEA update fails with SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out in enterprise environment

Problem

IDE network operations fail with SocketTimeoutException:

Caused by: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out

       at java.base/sun.nio.ch.NioSocketImpl.implRead(NioSocketImpl.java:314)
       at java.base/sun.nio.ch.NioSocketImpl.read(NioSocketImpl.java:355)
       at java.base/sun.nio.ch.NioSocketImpl$1.read(NioSocketImpl.java:808)
       at java.base/java.net.Socket$SocketInputStream.read(Socket.java:966)

Because a default value idea.read.timeout is not enough. Due to corporate settings, network operations take longer than usual

Resolution

To mitigate these update timeout issues:

1. Modify the JVM timeout settings: Enhance the timeout configuration by setting the -Didea.connection.timeout=<value> parameter in the IDE's JVM options. This can be accessed and modified through Help > Edit Custom VM Options.

2. Propagate settings in enterprise-scale deployments: For organizations managing multiple IDEs across users, settings can be distributed using the JetBrains IDE Provisioner (more details here) or via scripting modifications to the JVM options file on user systems.
