Problem
When performing Git operations in a project, the following error appears:
fatal: detected dubious ownership in repository at '/path/to/repository'
Cause
Git raises this warning when the owner of the repository directory does not match the user running Git commands. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized access or modification of repository files.
For more details, see: Git: Detect Dubious Ownership in Repository.
Resolution
-
Trust all repositories at once (quickest) —
git config --global --add safe.directory '*'— disables the check for every repo; fine on a single-user machine, avoid it on shared machines. -
Add the repository path to Git’s safe directories —
git config --global --add safe.directory /path/to/repository -
(Windows only) Try running the IDE as an administrator.
-
Fix the underlying ownership (root-cause fix) —
chown -Ron Linux/macOS,takeown/icaclson Windows.
Note on "run as administrator" (Windows): does not reliably fix this — elevation changes which account runs the IDE, not who owns the folder, so the mismatch could remain.
