Question
What is the bundled "JetBrains OS Integration" plugin (plugin ID com.intellij.platform.daemon), what does it do, and is it safe to disable?
Answer
"JetBrains OS Integration" is a bundled, first-party plugin shipped with IntelliJ-based IDEs. It runs a background process (jetbrainsd) that provides operating-system-level integration between the IDE and other JetBrains tools.
What it does
- Registers the
jetbrains://URL-scheme handler, so "Open in IDE" links from a web browser, the JetBrains Toolbox App, or a JetBrains Account open in the IDE. - Provides discovery of running IDEs for other JetBrains tools on the same machine.
- Supports the Remote Development connection flow (in progress).
About the permissions
The "other applications" the plugin communicates with are JetBrains' own tools, such as the Toolbox App, JetBrains Gateway, and JetBrains Account, not arbitrary third-party software. The plugin does not grant external software access to the system. Its scope is handling jetbrains:// links and local discovery for JetBrains products.
Is it safe to disable?
Yes. It is a standard, visible plugin and can be turned off without affecting core IDE functionality. Disabling it only removes the link-handling and discovery conveniences described above. Editing, building, running, debugging, version control, and other core features continue to work.
To disable or re-enable it, open Settings | Plugins, find "JetBrains OS Integration" on the Installed tab, toggle it, and restart the IDE when prompted. See Manage plugins for details.
If you have JetBrains Toolbox installed, also open it, click the settings icon in the top-right corner, find the "Advanced → Enable jetbrainsd" option, and disable or re-enable it.
