Problem
After upgrading a JetBrains IDE (such as IntelliJ IDEA) to a newer major version, scratch files and database consoles from the previous version are missing on first launch.
Cause
The automatic configuration migration from the previous version's settings directory to the new version's settings directory failed during the first launch. The IDE log (idea.log) contains an error similar to:
java.nio.file.FileSystemException: <old-config-path> -> <new-config-path>: No space left on device
at java.base/sun.nio.fs.UnixException.translateToIOException(UnixException.java:102)
...
at com.intellij.openapi.application.ConfigImportHelper.importConfigsTo(ConfigImportHelper.java:285)
The log also displays:
**Settings Import Failed**
Unable to import settings. ... No space left on device
This occurs when the system disk does not have enough free space to copy the previous configuration files — including scratch files and database consoles — into the new configuration directory.
Resolution
- Free up disk space on the system drive so the configuration directory can be copied.
- Start the new version of the IDE.
- Navigate to File | Manage IDE Settings | Import Settings.
- Select the previous version's configuration directory. For example, for IntelliJ IDEA 2025.3:
-
macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/IntelliJIdea2025.3 -
Windows:
%APPDATA%\JetBrains\IntelliJIdea2025.3 -
Linux:
~/.config/JetBrains/IntelliJIdea2025.3
-
macOS:
- Confirm the import.
Scratch files, database consoles, and other settings from the previous version are restored after the import completes. See Share IDE settings for additional details on the import procedure.
