Commit tool window: Single click on file opens diff preview

Problem

A single click on a file in the Commit tool window opens the diff preview window. The expected behavior is that a single click only selects the file, while a double click opens the diff.

Cause

The Show Diff Preview on Single Click option is enabled in the Commit tool window. When this option is active, any single click on a file in the changes list triggers the diff preview.

Resolution

To disable the diff preview on single click:

1. Open the Commit tool window.
2. Click the options menu (three dots icon) in the toolbar.
3. Disable Show Diff Preview on Single Click.

After disabling the option, a single click selects the file without opening the diff preview. The diff can still be opened manually via double click or the corresponding action.

Update

This feature is now disabled by default in all IDEs as it was discontinued. For now there is a registry key that can help to enable the feature back – however, we cannot guarantee that the registry will remain as an alternative. To access the registry, press Shift key two times (opens Search Everywhere) > type Registry.. > find the following key: show.diff.preview.as.editor.tab.with.single.click and disable it > Close > Restart IDE.

In Rider, the option Show Diff Preview on Single Click will become available in the Commit tool window options.

In the rest of the IDEs, the button Preview Diff will become available in the Commit tool window toolbar.

Both options toggle the same feature.
