Problem
Changes to tracked files are visible in the terminal via git status but do not appear in the Commit tool window in the IDE. Other Git operations (log, pull, push, branch checkout) work as expected.
The following warnings appear in the IDE log (idea.log):
Root mapping is under ignored root: file:///path/to/CVS/my-project
Ignoring change under another root: root: /.../my-project; mapped root: null
Cause
The Ignored Files and Folders list (Settings | Editor | File Types) includes entries such as CVS, .svn, and _svn by default. These entries are intended to exclude legacy version control metadata folders from project indexing.
When a folder matching one of these entries appears anywhere in the absolute path to the Git repository root — not just inside the project — the IDE treats the entire repository as an ignored root and suppresses VCS change detection.
Example: a repository at /home/user/Projects/CVS/my-project is affected because CVS is in the default ignored list, even though the project itself does not use CVS version control.
Resolution
- Open Settings (Cmd+, / Ctrl+Alt+S).
- Navigate to Editor | File Types and select the Ignored Files and Folders tab.
- Find the entry matching the folder name present in the project path (for example,
CVS). - Select the entry and click the Remove (−) button.
- Click Apply or OK.
Changes will appear in the Commit tool window immediately.
