Question
How can I configure the IDE to commit to two different git servers
Answer
To set up both a local Git server and GitHub accounts for use in IntelliJ IDEA, follow these steps:
-
Add Git repositories to your project:
- Navigate to Settings (⌘ + , on macOS or Ctrl + Alt + S on Windows/Linux) > Version Control > Directory Mappings.
- Add the required Git roots, which correspond to
.gitfolder locations for each repository.
-
Configure remote URLs for repositories:
- For each repository, specify its respective remote URL by using the following command in the terminal within the project root of the repository:
Replacegit remote add origin <remote_url><remote_url>with the actual URL of the server (e.g., the URL for your Git server on your local network or GitHub).
- For each repository, specify its respective remote URL by using the following command in the terminal within the project root of the repository:
-
Enable Git Credential Helper:
- Go to Settings (⌘ + , or Ctrl + Alt + S) > Version Control > Git > Use credential helper.
- When you perform a pull or push operation for the first time, the IDE will request credentials. These credentials will be saved in the credential helper for all subsequent operations.
-
Specify distinct committer/author details for each repository:
- Open a terminal in the repository's root directory and run the following commands:
Replacegit config user.name <username> git config user.email <email_address><username>and<email_address>with the appropriate values for each account.
- Open a terminal in the repository's root directory and run the following commands:
-
If any of the git repositories is hosted on GitHub – set up GitHub account for this repository:
- Navigate to Settings (⌘ + , or Ctrl + Alt + S) > Version Control > GitHub.
- Add account by specifying the credentials (either OAuth - login via GitHub website in brower or Personal Access Token).
- Refer to the detailed JetBrains documentation on how to set up a GitHub account.
By following the above steps, you can seamlessly work with multiple git hosting servers within the same IDE project.
