How to compare two arbitrary git commits via the IDE UI

Background/Situation

Sometimes it is needed to compare two commits which are not related or located close to each other in the repository history (git log). Therefore it is very hard or even impossible to get both commits to show up in the Log pane at the same time, in order to select them for comparison.

How to compare two unrelated git commits via the IDE UI?

Answer

Search for two revisions/commits in the Log pane via the search field (e.g. 23br5tf 9j7cv12)> select the two commits in Log pane > right-click > Compare Versions.
