Git commits not showing in the Log pane of the Git tool window: error shown - cannot read commit object <hash_id>

Problem

The Git commits do not appear in the 'Log' pane within the IDE's Git tool window. Error message shown: cannot read object <hash_id>

Cause

This issue might arise due to corruption or inconsistency in the content of the .git folder or incomplete repository cloning steps.

Resolution

Try the following steps:

• Close IDE, delete .idea folder and any *.iml files in your project root folder in file explorer, and re-import the project from existing sources
• Clone the project from scratch in an empty folder
