Branches/VCS widget shows the checked-out branch from a repository which is not currently selected

Problem

While working on a project with multiple modules/git repositories, the branch name displayed in the header of VCS/Branches widget does not correspond to the repository which is currently selected in the Project tool window.

Cause

The branches widget in IntelliJ shows the branch associated with the repository of the currently active file in the editor. This design choice might lead to confusion when dealing with multi-module projects, as the file being edited might switch to a file from a different repository, resulting in displaying that repository's branch information in the widget.

Resolution

The branch displayed in the VCS/Branches widget is tied to the repository of the currently active file in the editor. Verify the branch of any repository by opening a file within the corresponding repository.
