Background/Situation
Installing IDEs without manually entering the license on every launch.
Question
How to install PyCharm without invoking the pro trial?
How to silent install PyCharm with license activation?
How to modify the silent.config file for licensing?
Answer
Install PyCharm (or another JetBrains IDE) using the silent-install method described in the PyCharm installation guide (other IDEs follow the same pattern, for example the RubyMine installation guide).
To preconfigure the license server, set the JETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER environment variable described in Automatic server discovery (a newer version of the same mechanism is documented in the License Vault Cloud article).
JETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER is a machine or user environment variable, not a silent.config key. The installer does not read it from silent.config. Set it at the OS level before the IDE first runs, for example:
[System.Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable('JETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER', 'https://fls.example.edu:8080', 'Machine')
Setting the variable only pre-fills the Server address field in the license activation dialog. It does not skip that dialog. On first start, click Discover Server / Activate once to complete activation. There is currently no fully unattended path to license activation through this variable alone.
