Problem
Actions "Help > Diagnostic Tools > Show log in File Manager" and context action "Open [file] in %File manager%" are missing in the menus
Cause
Mismatched configuration and system file manager settings or an undefined system file manager can cause this issue.
Resolution
Try running the following script
#!/bin/bash
# Test file manager detection in Ubuntu
echo "Testing file manager detection..."
# 1. Check XDG_DATA_HOME and XDG_DATA_DIRS
XDG_DATA_HOME=${XDG_DATA_HOME:-"$HOME/.local/share"}
XDG_DATA_DIRS=${XDG_DATA_DIRS:-"/usr/local/share:/usr/share"}
echo "XDG_DATA_HOME: $XDG_DATA_HOME"
echo "XDG_DATA_DIRS: $XDG_DATA_DIRS"
# 2. Get default file manager using xdg-mime
echo -n "Default file manager from xdg-mime: "
FM_DESKTOP=$(xdg-mime query default inode/directory)
echo "$FM_DESKTOP"
# 3. Search for .desktop file in XDG directories
IFS=":"
found=0
for dir in $XDG_DATA_HOME $XDG_DATA_DIRS; do
desktop_path="$dir/applications/$FM_DESKTOP"
if [ -f "$desktop_path" ]; then
echo "Found .desktop file: $desktop_path"
echo "Contents of .desktop file:"
echo "------------------------"
cat "$desktop_path"
echo "------------------------"
# Extract Exec and Name lines
EXEC=$(grep "^Exec=" "$desktop_path" | cut -d'=' -f2-)
NAME=$(grep "^Name=" "$desktop_path" | cut -d'=' -f2-)
echo "Extracted Name: $NAME"
echo "Extracted Exec: $EXEC"
# Get the binary name (first part before space or % sign)
BINARY=$(echo "$EXEC" | sed 's/ .*$//' | sed 's/%.*$//')
echo "Binary name: $BINARY"
# Check if binary exists in PATH
if command -v "$BINARY" >/dev/null 2>&1; then
echo "✓ Binary '$BINARY' found in PATH"
else
echo "✗ Binary '$BINARY' NOT found in PATH"
fi
found=1
break
fi
done
if [ $found -eq 0 ]; then
echo "No .desktop file found for $FM_DESKTOP"
fi
# 4. Additional checks for common file managers
echo -e "\nChecking common file managers:"
for fm in nautilus dolphin nemo dde-file-manager thunar pcmanfm caja xdg-open; do
if command -v "$fm" >/dev/null 2>&1; then
echo "✓ $fm is installed"
else
echo "✗ $fm is not installed"
fi
done
If checks your system file manager configuration in the exact same way as the IDE does and it will point to the root of this issue.
