Question
How to ensure environment variables set in the user's system are propagated correctly to the IDE and used for git integrated Git commands?
Answer
Environment variables are inherited from the parent process that starts the IDE. There are some differences between OSes:
Windows: IDE is typically started using the .exe launcher from the GUI or from Toolbox App. In this case it inherits environment variables from Windows Explorer (System Properties > Environment Variables).
macOS: IDE is typically started using Spotlight, Finder, Dock or Toolbox App. GUI apps do not inherit the shell environment variables (.zshrc, bash_profile, etc.).
Linux: IDE is typically launched from Terminal, desktop or Toolbox App. GUI apps usually inherit from the display manager (like gdm, lightdm, etc.).
To ensure the IDE inherits the necessary environment variables, it is recommended to launch it from the relevant terminal session – which includes these environment options.
Git integration uses the same process to inherit environment variables.
