Problem
Unable to authenticate to GitHub Enterprise within the IDE's Pull Request integration feature when the organization disables Personal Access Tokens (PATs). The integration prompts only for a token, and alternatives like OAuth (available for github.com) are missing for Enterprise connections.
Cause
The IDE's GitHub integration feature currently supports only Personal Access Tokens (standard and fine-grained) for authenticating to GitHub Enterprise instances to access functionalities like viewing and managing Pull Requests. OAuth authentication is not yet implemented for GitHub Enterprise connections.
Resolution
- To use the integrated Pull Request features (viewing PRs, commenting, etc.) with GitHub Enterprise, a Personal Access Token is required. If standard PATs are disabled, check if fine-grained PATs are permitted by your organization.
- If all types of PATs are disallowed, it is not possible to use the IDE's built-in GitHub Pull Request tool window with the GitHub Enterprise instance at this time.
- There is a feature request to add OAuth support for GitHub Enterprise integration: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-182218.
Note on basic Git operations: Standard Git operations (like clone, push, pull, fetch) are separate from the PR integration. It is possible to configure Git to use other authentication methods (e.g., SSH keys, credential helpers) for these operations. Configure these via the terminal or in IDE settings under Settings | Version Control | Git. These methods will work independently of the GitHub PR integration's authentication requirements.
