Problem
Certain folders within a project are not being tracked by Git. They are not staged, committed, or pushed to the remote repository (e.g., GitLab). In the IDE's Project tool window, these folders are displayed with the color indicating 'ignored' status, but checking the root .gitignore file does not show an explicit entry for the full path of these specific folders.
Cause
The .gitignore file uses patterns to determine which files and folders to ignore. An entry like FolderName/ without a leading slash (/) will ignore any directory named FolderName anywhere within the project's directory tree, but also all the subfolders under it. The IDE correctly reflects this ignored status based on the rules found in the .gitignore file(s).
For example, an entry Results/ in the root .gitignore will ignore:
./Results/./src/module/Results/- Any other folder under these two directories
Resolution
- Inspect
.gitignore: Open the.gitignorefile(s) in the project - Identify Matching Patterns: Look for entries that match the name of the ignored folders, especially those ending with a slash (
/), likeData/orResults/ - Modify
.gitignore:- If the rule is too broad, remove or comment out the line.
- If it is necessary to ignore a folder with that name at the project root, add a leading slash:
/FolderName/. - If it is necessary to keep the general rule but un-ignore a specific instance, use a negation pattern (e.g.,
!path/to/specific/FolderName/), although making the initial rule more specific is often clearer. - To ignore only targeted folders and not their subfolders, remove the trailing slash character:
/FolderName
- Stage the Folders: After correcting the
.gitignorefile, it may be needed to explicitly add the previously ignored folders to Git tracking using the terminal or IDE:git add path/to/your/folder/ - Commit Changes: Commit the modifications to
.gitignoreand the newly tracked folders.
The folders should now be tracked by Git and no longer appear as ignored in the IDE.
