Background/Situation
When committing changes in the IDE, it might be necessary to exclude certain modified lines within a file from the current commit, while committing other changes/lines in that same file.
Question
How to exclude specific modified lines of a file from a commit in the IDE?
Answer
To exclude specific lines from a commit while keeping others within the same file:
- Open the Commit tool window (View | Tool Windows | Commit or
Cmd+0/Alt+0) - Select the file containing the lines that should be partially committed
- This will open the diff view, showing the differences between the local changes and the base revision
- In the diff pane that displays local changes (usually the right side), locate the modified lines or chunks to exclude from the upcoming commit
- Uncheck the checkbox located in the gutter next to each specific line or chunk that should be excluded
- Observe that the count of included changes next to the file name in the Commit tool window updates to reflect only the lines that remain checked
- When the commit action is executed, only the changes corresponding to the checked lines will be included in that commit. The unchecked lines will remain as uncommitted local changes in the active changelist.
