Question
How to remove (unstage) a file from the Git staging area using the IDE graphical interface?
Answer
To unstage files in the IDE, first it is necessary to enable the Git staging area feature:
- Open Settings (
Ctrl + Alt + Son Windows/Linux,⌘ + ,on macOS). - Navigate to Version Control > Git.
- Under the Commit section, check the box for Enable staging area.
- Note: This requires the non-modal Commit interface. If you are using the modal commit dialog, you need to enable the non-modal interface first, under Settings > Version Control > Commit > Use non-modal commit interface.
- Click Apply and OK.
Once the staging area is enabled:
- Open the Commit tool window (View | Tool Windows | Commit or
Alt + 0/⌘ + 0). - There is a list of files grouped under Staged and Unstaged changes.
- To remove a file from the staging area, locate it under the Staged section.
- Right-click the file and select Unstage, or select the file(s) and click the – (minus) icon associated with the Staged list.
- The file will be moved to the Unstaged section.
