Problem
JetBrains IDEs (e.g., PyCharm) exhibit significant latency/slow performance on various Linux machines when operating behind the corporate proxy. Clearing JetBrains caches and configuration directories only provides temporary relief (typically limited to the current session).
Cause
The IDE logs show repeated SSL/TLS handshake and certificate validation errors when connecting through the proxy:
SSLHandshakeException: certificate_unknown - PKIX path building failed
This indicates the IDE’s JVM cannot build a trusted certificate chain for the proxy (or for connections intercepted/rewritten by the proxy). The repeated failed connection attempts can lead to timeouts and automatic retries, contributing to overall IDE slowdowns.
Resolution
- Ensure the corporate proxy’s Root CA and any required Intermediate CA certificates are trusted by the IDE:
- In the IDE: Settings → Appearance & Behavior → System Settings → Server Certificates
- In the IDE: Settings → Appearance & Behavior → System Settings → Server Certificates
- Verify the proxy settings:
- Go to HTTP Proxy settings and use Check Connection to validate connectivity.
- Restart PyCharm after updating certificate trust and proxy configuration.
- Monitor whether performance/latency improves and whether the error persists.
- If the issue persists, please provide the IDE logs for further investigation.
