Question
We need to clarify the availability requirements for an on-premise installation of IDE Services, including whether continuous uptime is required for IDE usage and how a developer can work without a VPN connection.
Answer
-
For users employing the License Vault for license allocation, continuous connectivity to the IDE Services server is necessary. IDEs send periodic license-refresh requests to the server for validation. More information can be found at: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/ide-services/Activating_a_license.html.
-
The Toolbox App is not mandatory for the License Vault but is required for AI Enterprise and IDE Provisioner. This app centralizes distribution of IDE configurations across the organization’s developer machines. More on this is available at: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/ide-services/architecture-overiview.html.
-
High Availability (HA) is recommended for better reliability, ideally through a setup with at least two nodes. Additional details can be referenced at: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/ide-services/system-requirements.html#server_requirements.
-
Developers require a network connection to obtain and maintain their licenses from License Vault. However, they can continue working offline for up to 48 hours as long as the IDE isn’t restarted. Once the 48-hour window closes, or after an IDE restart, a network re-connection is necessary to regain license access.
-
Considerations for on-premise versus cloud:
- On-Prem Installation offers greater flexibility for tailoring IDE Services to your organization’s IT infrastructure needs.
- Cloud Setup provides easier initial configurations and ongoing maintenance, including updates, handled externally by the service provider.
