Problem
The Junie agent in the new version of the JetBrains AI Assistant plugin misses the Auto/Code/Ask mode selector
Root cause
Currently, the JetBrains team is working to improve the integration of the Junie agent into the JetBrains AI Assistant.
- In the older versions of the JetBrains AI Assistant, the Junie plugin is integrated as a Junie agent. And the Junie plugin has a mode selector - Auto/Code/Ask
- In the newer versions of the JetBrains AI Assistant, the Junie CLI can be integrated via ACP. And Junie CLI currently doesn't support a mode selector.
There is a feature request for this - Implement Ask mode in Junie CLI.
How to identify which Junie (plugin or CLI) is behind the Junie agent in JetBrains AI Assistant?
-
If the icon is green, then it's Junie plugin
When navigating to Settings | Tools | AI Assistant | Agents, the Junie agent (via ACP) isn't installed.
-
If the icon is grey and it's marked by beta (β), then it's Junie CLI via ACP
When navigating to Settings | Tools | AI Assistant | Agents, the Junie agent (via ACP) is installed.
Conclusion
It's expected behavior for Junie CLI that the Auto/Code/Ask mode selector is missing.
The JetBrains team is working to improve the agent's ability to understand the task based on context. Check the latest Junie agent version (via ACP).
Workaround
As a workaround to return Junie plugin with the Auto/Code/Ask mode selector, apply the steps:
- If Junie via ACP is already installed, then navigate to Settings | Tools | AI Assistant | Agents, find Junie, and uninstall it
- Install Junie plugin via Settings | Plugins
Note: If JetBrains AI Assistant plugin doesn't allow activating the Junie plugin (green icon), then downgrade the plugin.
