Background/Situation
The extension stores data in three places in VS Code: a per-project index and cache, a downloaded language-server binary shared across projects, and the EULA acceptance and license state. Removing this data resets the extension to a clean state, which is useful after a corrupted index, a stuck download, or before a fresh setup.
The same steps apply to the "Kotlin by JetBrains" extension; only the downloaded-binary folder name differs (kotlin-server instead of intellij-server).
Question
How to delete the language server's cached index, downloaded binary, and stored consent for IntelliJ IDEA in Visual Studio Code?
Answer
Clear the per-project index and caches
Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P, macOS Cmd+Shift+P) and run IntelliJ: Clear Caches and Restart Language Server. This deletes the project's index directory and rebuilds it. The confirmation dialog shows the exact index path.
If the extension is connected to an external server (intellij.dev.serverPort is set), caches can't be cleared from the editor. The dialog offers Copy Path; stop that server and delete the copied directory manually.
Delete the downloaded language server
In Settings, enable intellij.dev.commands, then run IntelliJ (Developer): Remove Downloaded Language Server from the Command Palette and reload the window when prompted. The extension downloads the server again on the next start.
To delete it manually, close VS Code and delete this folder:
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/IntelliJServer/servers/intellij-server - Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\IntelliJServer\servers\intellij-server - Linux:
~/.local/share/JetBrains/IntelliJServer/servers/intellij-server, or$XDG_DATA_HOME/JetBrains/IntelliJServer/servers/intellij-serverifXDG_DATA_HOMEis set
Reset EULA acceptance and license state
In Settings, enable intellij.dev.commands, then run IntelliJ (Developer): Reset Licensing and Agreements from the Command Palette. The EULA and license setup run again on next start.
Delete the log file
The server writes its log-file path to its Output channel (View | Output, see User interface) as a Log file: <path> line. Open that path and delete the file if a clean log is needed.
