Question
How to collect a performance snapshot of a ReSharper command line tool, such as cleanupcode.exe or inspectcode.exe?
Answer
The steps apply to the .exe tools from the ReSharper command line tools zip archive. The snapshot is collected with the standalone dotTrace profiler.
- Download dotTrace from the dotTrace download page and install it. Select the 64-bit version.
- Start dotTrace. The dotTrace Home window opens.
- Under New Process Run, click Add.
- In the New Run Configuration wizard, select Standalone and click Next.
- Specify the path to the tool executable, for example
C:\CommandLineTools\cleanupcode.exe. - Specify the arguments that reproduce the slow run, for example the path to the solution file.
- Click Save.
- In Profiler Options, set the profiling type to Timeline. Select Sampling only when the support team asks for a Sampling snapshot.
- Turn on Collect profiling data from start.
- Click Start.
- Wait until the tool finishes. The snapshot opens in dotTrace Viewer.
- In dotTrace Viewer, click the hamburger icon and select Save Snapshot.
- Compress the snapshot file into a zip archive.
- Upload the archive to JetBrains Uploads and copy the Upload ID.
- Share the Upload ID with the support team in the support ticket or the YouTrack issue.
