Question
IntelliJ IDE crashes in the middle of the work. How to troubleshoot this?
Solutions to try
- Temporarily disable all third-party plugins and restart the IDE: Settings | Plugins | ⚙ | Disable all downloaded plugins
- MacOS users: go to Help | Edit Custom VM Options, add
-Dsun.java2d.metal=falsethere and restart the IDE.
- If there is Antivirus software or a firewall in place, make sure that IDE processes, default directories, installation folder and project files are all excluded from the scan (more details on what to exclude can be found here).
⚠️ What to send to support if it still crashes
- Application logs: Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data (entire archive)
- Relevant Java crash logs: files called
java_error_in*.logorjbr_err*.logthat can be found in your user home directory
- System crash dumps (in the absence of Java logs):
-
macOS:
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ -
Windows:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\CrashDumps
-
macOS:
