JSP files open as plain text: Server Pages plugin unbundled in IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2.1

Problem

After an update to IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate 2026.2.1 or later, .jsp, .jspx, .tag and .tagf files open as plain text. Syntax highlighting is missing and code completion is unavailable. Java code inside scriptlets is not recognized.

A downgrade to 2026.2.0.1 restores the previous behavior.

idea.log on an affected installation contains:

plugin com.intellij.jsp is not resolved

The Loaded bundled plugins: line in the same log does not list Jakarta EE: Server Pages (JSP), and the plugin does not appear under Settings | Plugins | Installed.

Cause

The Jakarta EE: Server Pages (JSP) plugin was removed from the IntelliJ IDEA distribution in 2026.2.1. The change is intentional and is tracked in Unbundle JSP Plugin. JSP support now ships as a separate JetBrains Marketplace plugin.

The change is included in builds 262.9437.274 and 263.806, so it applies to the 2026.2 line from 2026.2.1 onward and to the 2026.3 line. A downgrade to 2026.2.0.1 therefore holds only until the next upgrade.

Resolution

Install the plugin from JetBrains Marketplace:

1. Open Settings | Plugins | Marketplace.
2. Search for Jakarta EE: Server Pages (JSP).
3. Click Install.
4. Restart the IDE when prompted.

The plugin requires an IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate subscription and is not available in IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition.

If the plugin already appears under Settings | Plugins | Installed in a disabled state, enable it. Restart the IDE afterwards.
