IDE shows a blank window when opening another project (macOS)

Problem

1. Make sure the setting is this in System Setting: Desktop & Dock | Windows | Prefer tabs when opening documents | Always
2. Open one Project, it shows correctly
3. Open another project in IntelliJ IDEA, and it should be opened as a tab in the same editor window.
4. The whole IDE window shows as a blank page.

Workaround

1. Download one of the old JetBrains Runtime builds below and install it:
   • For x64 (Intel): jbr_jcef-21.0.8-osx-x64-b1038.73.pkg
   • For aarch64 (Apple Silicon): jbr_jcef-21.0.8-osx-aarch64-b1038.73.pkg
2. Go to Help | Find Action, look for "Choose Boot Java Runtime for the IDE"
3. Select the installed JBR's directory in Add Custom Runtime -> Add JDK from disk
   • Example for x64: /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jbr_jcef-21.0.8-osx-x64-b1038.73/
   • Example for aarch64: /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jbr_jcef-21.0.8-osx-aarch64-b1038.73/
4. Restart the IDE
