IDE cannot update/download plugins due to firewall/VPN/network threat protection policy – Support | JetBrains

Problem

IDE cannot connect to the plugin marketplace to check for updates and download the latest version of the plugins. Help > Check for Updates.. fails with the following error message: Failed to load plugins from the default repository: Remote host terminated the handshake. The following exception is thrown in the idea.log file:

Connection to URLs: https://plugins.jetbrains.com/files/brokenPlugins.json and https://plugins.jetbrains.com/files/pluginsXMLIds.json from a browser fails, whether a proxy is used or not.

When trying to connect to the plugin marketplace via browser, the following errors are printed in the browser console:

Cause

There is a security software or VPN that blocks the connection: firewall, network threat protection, antivirus, etc.

Resolution

Try to use a different network – e.g. shared hotspot from a mobile phone. Ask the network administrator to modify firewall rules and allow access to: https://plugins.jetbrains.com.
