Problem
I installed IntelliJ IDE on the fresh macOS and I immediately the "Shortcut conflicts" dialog
Cause
The problem originates from IntelliJ IDEs' multi-platform nature.
Some shortcuts are the same for all platforms (except Cmd in Mac is replaced by Ctrl in Windows and Linux). Example: Cmd+Shift+A (Ctrl+Shift+A) opens "Search everywhere" on the "Actions" tab in any OS.
Some shortcuts are specific to a particular platform. Example: Cmd+Backtick activates the next window on Mac, but does nothing on Windows.
In 2026, IntelliJ Platform supports thousands of actions. A default keymap attempts to assign a memorizable shortcut to each common action, which is why all simple shortcuts are claimed. Some of them override system shortcuts. The decision whether to override a system shortcut or not assign a memorizable shortcut for an action had to be a compromise.
Resolution
As the defaults work for many users, but not for everyone, there is an advanced configuration:
- Edit your keymap manually in "Settings | Keymap"
- Edit your system shortcuts in "System settings | Keyboard | Keyboard shortcuts"
- Try downloading custom keymaps from JetBrains Marketplace. Note: there is a Mnemonic keymap plugin that may work better for you.
Additional information
Currently, there is no way for IntelliJ IDE to know what are exact conflicts and resolve them in one dialog. Please upvote the related feature request Add information about system shortcut settings in IDE Keymap conflicts tab to add this functionality.
If you ignore the dialog, MacOS built-in behaviour takes over (since Apple has more control over your MacBook).
