Problem
When navigating to File | Settings | Build, Execution, Deployment | Build Tools | Gradle, the Gradle settings panel may show the following message and no other UI elements:
Select configuration element in the tree to edit its settings
This prevents users from editing any Gradle-related configuration inside the IDE UI.
Cause
This issue is commonly triggered by malformed or conflicting environment variables in the operating system. Examples include:
- Duplicate entries in
PATH - Combined entries that should be separate (see Gradle settings screen shows “Select configuration element in the tree to edit its settings”)
- Strings with unexpected or non-ASCII characters (see Gradle settings screen shows “Select configuration element in the tree to edit its settings”Gradle settings screen shows “Select configuration element in the tree to edit its settings”)
- Incorrect Java-related variables (
JAVA_HOME,JDK_HOME, etc.) - Invalid GRADLE_HOME or GRADLE_USER_HOME entries
These issues can cause the IDE to fail while reading system environment variables, which results in UI components failing to load, such as the Gradle settings page.
Resolution
Review and correct your system environment variables.
