Problem
After starting IntelliJ IDEA, it only displays an empty window. The window can be resized or minimized but not closed. The process needs to be terminated using the Task Manager. Repeated attempts to start the application are occasionally successful but have a low probability of starting normally.
Cause
The issue was caused by the "Settings Repository" plugin being enabled. This plugin is deprecated and no longer updated/bundled by IntelliJ IDEA.
Resolution
-
Disable all third-party plugins:
- Navigate to Settings | Plugins.
- Click the ⚙ icon and select Disable all downloaded plugins.
- Restart IntelliJ IDEA and check if the issue persists.
-
Test with a sample project to identify if the issue is specific to a particular project.
-
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, delete the IDE configuration and system directories:
- Shut down the IDE.
- Locate the configuration directory, back it up, and delete it.
- Locate the system directory and delete it as well.
- Restart IntelliJ IDEA to allow the files to regenerate.
-
If the "Settings Repository" plugin was identified as the cause of the issue:
- Remove the "Settings Repository" plugin completely as it is deprecated. For more details, refer to the plugin documentation.
The issue should be resolved, and IntelliJ IDEA should start normally.
