Question
Do IntelliJ-based IDEs, such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and PhpStorm, support Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022? Is a multi-user Remote Desktop Services (RDS), terminal server, or Citrix host supported?
Answer
Windows Server is not in the system requirements of versions 2026.1 and 2026.2. A multi-user RDS, terminal server, or Citrix host is not in the system requirements of 2025.3, 2026.1, or 2026.2.
| IDE version | Windows versions in the system requirements |
|---|---|
| 2025.3 | Windows 10 1809 64-bit or later, Windows Server 2019 64-bit or later. See System requirements of IntelliJ IDEA 2025.3 |
| 2026.1, 2026.2 | Windows 10 and 11. See System requirements of IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 |
The PyCharm, WebStorm, and PhpStorm installation guides have the same list.
The IDE can be installed on Windows Server 2019 and 2022. Such installations are in use, including with Citrix. A problem that also occurs on Windows 10 or 11 is handled as any other problem. A problem that occurs only on Windows Server, or only in an RDS session, does not get priority for a fix. Support looks for a workaround in this case.
Known problems on such a setup:
- PyCharm 2026 crashes on the Welcome Screen in Citrix: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION in skiko-windows-x64.dll
- Start Failed on Windows: AccessDeniedException, parent folder is not listable: version 2026.2 does not start for a user who cannot list a folder above the installation directory
- IntelliJ Performance Terrible over Remote Desktop Connection (RDP): the IDE interface is slow in a Remote Desktop (RDP) session
To install the IDE for all users of the host, set mode=admin in the silent configuration file. Run the installer as an administrator. See Silent configuration file.
