Question
Is it possible to download the client/frontend separately and put it in a special location for Toolbox to find?
Answer
Yes, it's possible. You can do this using jetbrains-client-downloader (Linux x86-64 tool, follow the link for details), a web browser, or curl/wget.
Download URL Pattern
Format: {baseUrl}/{clientDistributionName}-{buildNumber}{platformSuffix}
Example: wget https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/code-with-me/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133.tar.gz.
Complete Examples (URLs)
- Windows x64:
https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/code-with-me/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133.jbr.win.zip - Windows ARM64:
https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/code-with-me/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133-aarch64.jbr.win.zip - Linux x64:
https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/code-with-me/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133.tar.gz - Linux ARM64:
https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/code-with-me/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133-aarch64.tar.gz - macOS x64 (Intel):
https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/code-with-me/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133.sit - macOS ARM64 (Apple Silicon):
https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/code-with-me/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133-aarch64.sit
Distribution Name Evolution
The client distribution name has changed over time based on build numbers:
- Snapshot builds: JetBrainsClient
- Build < 211.6167: IntelliJClient
- Build < 213.5318: CodeWithMeGuest
- Build >= 213.5318: JetBrainsClient
Platform Suffixes by OS and Architecture
The platform suffix varies based on:
- Client build number (whether JRE is bundled or not, it’s bundled by default for quite a long time)
- Operating system (Linux, Windows, Mac)
- CPU architecture (Intel x64 or ARM64/aarch64)
Modern. Client Build >= 223.4374 or snapshot (WITH bundled JRE):
| Platform | Architecture | Suffix |
|---|---|---|
| Linux | x86_64 (Intel) | .tar.gz |
| Linux | ARM64 | -aarch64.tar.gz |
| Windows | x86_64 (Intel) | .jbr.win.zip |
| Windows | ARM64 | -aarch64.jbr.win.zip |
| macOS | x86_64 (Intel) | .sit |
| macOS | ARM64 (Apple Silicon) | -aarch64.sit |
Old. Client Build < 223.4374 (WITHOUT bundled JRE):
| Platform | Architecture | Suffix |
|---|---|---|
| Linux | x86_64 (Intel) | -no-jbr.tar.gz |
| Linux | ARM64 | -no-jbr-aarch64.tar.gz |
| Windows | x86_64 (Intel) | .win.zip |
| Windows | ARM64 | -aarch64.win.zip |
| macOS | x86_64 (Intel) | -no-jdk.sit |
| macOS | ARM64 (Apple Silicon) | -no-jdk-aarch64.sit |
Old. JRE Download URLs (relevant only for builds < 223.4374, don’t needed for recent versions)
For clients without bundled JRE, a separate JRE download is required:
Base URL: https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/jbr/
Format: jbr_jcef-{jdkVersion}-{platform}-b{jdkBuild}.tar.gz
Platform strings:
- Linux x64: linux-x64
- Linux ARM64: linux-aarch64
- Windows x64: windows-x64
- Windows ARM64: windows-aarch64
- macOS x64: osx-x64
- macOS ARM64: osx-aarch64
Example JRE URL: https://download.jetbrains.com/idea/jbr/jbr_jcef-17_0_11-linux-x64-b1536.1.tar.gz
Paths
Put the unpacked client in the expected location for Toolbox app. Examples for the client build 253.31033.133:
Linux
Client: ~/.local/share/JetBrains/Toolbox/internal-tools/JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133/<files>
macOS
Client: ~/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/Toolbox/internal-tools/253.31033.133/GoLand.app
Windows
Client: %LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Toolbox\internal-tools\JetBrainsClient-253.31033.133.jbr.win\<files>
Caveats
- You have to restart Toolbox app after provisioning the client files. Otherwise, it will try to download the client anyway.
- macOS client is packaged to
.sit. You need some external tool to unpack it (e.g. unzip, The Unarchiver, Pacifist).
