Problem
The creation of a devcontainer fails with the error: "The host should have at least 4 GB of memory. Found: 2,84 GB". Attempts to adjust the minimal host requirements using the devcontainer.json file are not supported.
Cause
The minimal host requirements are necessary to ensure stable functionality of the IDE. These limits cannot be modified through devcontainer.json. The error arises due to the Docker VM's current memory allocation being less than the required 4 GB, particularly on Windows systems using WSL.
Resolution
To resolve the issue, increase the memory limit allocated to Docker through its settings.
Steps:
-
For Docker Desktop:
- Open Docker Desktop.
- Navigate to Settings > Resources > Advanced.
- Adjust the memory allocation slider to at least 4 GB.
- Apply and restart Docker if prompted.
-
For Windows WSL:
- Update the WSL settings to allocate sufficient resources to the Docker VM.
- Refer to this forum thread for additional guidance.
After making these changes, retry creating the devcontainer. The error should no longer appear.
